MORE ABOUT WEST SIDE STORY…
WEST SIDE STORY is based on Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, with a theme of a forbidden love attempting to bloom in an unforgiving and violent world. The Sharks are a Puerto Rican gang and the Jets are second generation Americans. Both gangs are struggling to find a place to call their own and tap into the American Dream. The young protagonist Tony, a former member of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, who is the leader of the Sharks.
The dark theme, classy music with famous songs like ‘I Feel Pretty’, ‘America’ and ‘Maria’, the stylised dance scenes, and the focus on social problems distinguished WEST SIDE STORY as a turning point in American Musical Theatre. The show was nominated for many awards and won an Oscar for ‘Best Art and Set Decoration’, two Grammys for ‘Best Soundtrack Album’ and ‘Best Jazz Performance’, and three Golden Globes for ‘Best Motion Picture Musical’, ‘Best Supporting Actress’ and ‘Best Supporting Actor’.
WEST SIDE STORY is presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International (Europe). All authorised performance materials are also supplied by MTI Europe: www.mtishows.co.uk.
